The rest of my days.
A poem about what could have been.
The rest of days.
i could be anywhere but i'm right here with you, staring out this window, wondering if we will make it through to the end of the year, praying that maybe christmas will take us back to where we were toward the beginning, when we held each other the way the mouth of a flower holds the face of a hummingbird, with such gentle gratitude, as if having lived a lifetime in loneliness and suddenly feeling lonely no longer i've fallen a few times, but never the way i fell for you, as if stumbling headfirst into a God-sized hole in my chest and finding you, waiting patiently below, george seated beside you, wagging his tail, you taking my hand and me taking yours, us walking down to the park just up the road once there sipping our coffees, leaned up against one another, as if the other were a sun-warmed wall on a cold winter day i hope you know, i could have built a home there, with you i hope you know, i could have spent the rest of my days right there, with you.
