Ray Bradbury died with a net worth of around $30 million.
However, there was a time in his life when he was so broke, he couldn’t afford rent on an office. Keep in mind, this was before Starbucks. You couldn’t hole up at a cafe and writer for hours.
To keep expenses low, the legendary science fiction writer did the bulk of his writing from his garage. His makeshift office would be short-lived, though. After the birth of his kids, the garage became surrounded by wonderful distractions.
His daughters would often tap on the window panes, begging their father to get up from his typewriter and step outside and play.
The lease is up.
Bradbury’s new office became the basement of the UCLA library. While he didn’t have to pay rent, he did have to pay to “type” on the library’s typewriters.
